Opinion & Analysis

Guantanamo Remembered

Moazzam Begg

My life changed irretrievably on the night of 31st January 2002 when Pakistani and US intelligence agents abducted me from my Islamabad house in the middle of the night, in front of my family, at gunpoint, and took me to a series of secret and military prisons that included Kandahar, Bagram and Guantanamo Bay. After three years of an ordeal that included being, punched and kicked, forcibly stripped, shaved, violated, spat upon; enduring racial and religious abuse, incommunicado incarceration in a cell smaller than an average house toilet; being subjected to over 300 interrogations, sometimes with my wrists shackled to my ankles from behind my back; watching the Quran being desecrated; being threatened with torture in Syria or Egypt; .  Read more...

Room for Jews Only in Israel's 'Villa in the Jungle'

Jonathan Cook

The wheel is turning full circle. Last week the Israeli parliament updated a 59-year-old law originally intended to prevent hundreds of thousands of Palestinian refugees from returning to the homes and lands from which they had been expelled as Israel was established. The purpose of the draconian 1954 Prevention of Infiltration Law was to lock up any Palestinian who managed to slip past the snipers guarding the new state's borders. Fast-forward six decades and Israel is relying on the infiltration law again, this time to prevent a supposedly new threat to its existence: the arrival each year of several thousand desperate African asylum seekers.Read more...

The CIA and the Iran Caper
Ray McGovern

Washington Post columnist David Ignatius, in his accustomed role as unofficial surrogate CIA spokesman, has thrown light on how the CIA under its new director, David Petraeus, helped craft the screenplay for this week’s White House spy feature: the Iranian-American-used-car-salesman-Mexican-drug-cartel plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the U.S. In Thursday’s column, Ignatius notes that, initially, White House and Justice Department officials found the story “implausible.” It was. But the Petraeus team soon leapt to the rescue, reflecting the four-star-general-turned-intelligence-chief’s deep-seated animus toward Iran. Before Ignatius’s article, I had seen no one allude to the fact that much about this crime-stopper tale had come from the CIA. Read more...

Moral Bankruptcy: Will US Veto Palestine?
Jim Miles

This week at the UN - if the U.S. push to disable the process does not succeed - a vote will be taken on Palestinian statehood. The U.S. has already stated that it will veto any vote that supports Palestinian statehood. So why take the vote if that is the end result? A recent global poll indicated that by a two to one margin, the people of the world, of all of earth, all of humanity, support the idea of a Palestinian state. That is probably about the same as the General Assembly vote will be as the U.S. and its sycophantic allies will argue that the best way to proceed is through negotiations. Read more...
